PTSD Awareness Month and Here is What You Need To Know

June is National PTSD Awareness Month. With that here at All Modern Mommy, I wanted to shed light on this for my readers and for myself. This is a very intimate topic and this will be approached with respect, understanding, love, and most of all awareness. So you can know the signs if you are experiencing PTSD or if someone you know may be going through the same.

What is PTSD?

According to MayoClinic, PTSD is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It is a mental disorder when someone experiences or witnesses something terrifying. Now they are suffering from symptoms like nightmares, flashbacks, and anxiety to name a few.

The symptoms are usually heightened when they visit where the trauma occurred.

Who can develop PTSD?

Unfortunately, anyone at any age can develop this disorder.

Experiencing or witnessing these events are risk facks for someone to develop PTSD:

  • Child Abuse
  • Physical Abuse
  • Domestic VIolence
  • Accident
  • Diaster
  • War
  • Torture
  • Neglect
  • Mistreatment
  • Losing a baby
  • Victim of Bullying
  • Witnessing Death
  • Witnessing Traumatic News Coverage

Some develop PTSD and do not why.

what are the treatments for PTSD?

PTSD is usually self-diagnosable. However, if you are not sure seek help from your physician.

And if you feel any suicidal thoughts or harming others call 911 right away, help is there.

  • Cognitive Therapy- This is talk therapy that helps you to eliminate any bad thoughts in of mind by talking through them. This is usually combined with Exposure Therapy.
  • Exposure Therapy- This is where you will safely re-enter the place of the trama.
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Processing (EMDP)- The eyes are guided to make certain eye movements to help you process how you will react to the traumatic events in the future.
