If you’re anything like me, mac and cheese isn’t just food — it’s a feeling.

It’s what you crave when you need a little comfort after a long day or when you just want something that tastes like your childhood.

In my house, Southern baked mac and cheese is a staple recipe that has been passed down from generation to generation.

You will always find this recipe at Thanksgiving, Sunday dinner, or any time that it just pairs perfectly with our meals for the night.

What Makes Southern Baked Mac and Cheese So Special

Southern mac and cheese hits different. It’s not the quick stovetop kind you whip up in a rush — this is the kind you bake slow, letting the edges get crispy and the center stay rich and creamy.

It’s made with real shredded cheese and a custard-style base that binds everything together with the perfect balance of creaminess and structure.

Every bite feels nostalgic — creamy, flavorful, and baked with just enough golden cheese on top to make you close your eyes and smile.

This baked mac and cheese dish goes perfectly with my old fashioned Southern Fried Chicken.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Pasta

  • 1 lb elbow macaroni (or cavatappi if you want a fun twist)

Cheese Blend

  • 3 cups sharp cheddar cheese, freshly shredded
  • 1 cup Colby Jack cheese
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup Velveeta cubes (for that extra creamy touch)

The Creamy Base

  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted

Seasoning Love

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon mustard powder (optional, but adds a little something special)

How to Make It

1. Boil the Pasta

Cook your macaroni until just tender. Don’t go too soft — it’s going to keep cooking in the oven. Drain it, add a touch of butter, and set aside.

2. Make That Creamy Custard

In a big bowl, whisk together evaporated milk, whole milk, heavy cream, eggs, and melted butter. Season it up with salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and a little mustard powder if you’re feeling fancy.

3. Bring It All Together

Pour your macaroni into the milk mixture, then fold in half of your shredded cheese. It’ll already start smelling amazing.

Grab your greased baking dish (9×13 works great). Add a layer of cheesy pasta, sprinkle more cheese, repeat. Think of it as layering love — the more cheese, the better. Make sure the top is covered completely for that golden crust we all fight over.

4. Bake Until Golden and Gorgeous

Pop it in the oven at 350°F for about 35–40 minutes. You’ll know it’s ready when the top is bubbly and slightly browned around the edges.

5. Let It Rest

This is the hardest part. Let it cool for about 10–15 minutes before serving. Trust me, this helps it set up perfectly — and keeps those cheesy layers intact.

Tips from My Kitchen

  • Don’t skip the rest time — it helps it thicken up.
  • Always use multiple cheeses for depth and meltiness and a bang of flavor.
  • If you like a kick, sprinkle in a little cayenne or top with crushed red pepper before serving.

Fun Twists

  • Spicy Southern Mac: Add diced jalapeños or hot sauce to the cheese mixture.
  • Smoky Bacon Mac: Crumble crispy bacon on top before baking.
  • Holiday Style: Mix in a handful of shredded gouda for that extra-rich, holiday vibe.
